Racquetball, a fast-paced and fun game, can be played by one or more players. You can play it singles (one against one) or in doubles (two to two). The rules of the game can be played by anyone, even beginners.

How to play

The basic raquetball rules can be broken down into three parts: serving, receiving, and scoring. There are some variations that apply to different versions of racquetball, but these three main rules are the most important ones you need to know in order to play the sport.

Service

In order to serve in an racquetball match you need to stand at least one arm length from the backwall. You then have the opportunity to hit the ball up against the wall. The player who gets the first bounce closest to the front wall is the server for that game.

If the server serves a fault, the opponent wins the point and becomes the server for the next serve. The server will then have two chances to serve.

Returns

After a successful return, the players will return the ball alternately until one of the two fails to return the ball. The ball may be returned to the front wall or hit on other walls. After hitting the walls, it will bounce twice on each side.

The rally is won by the first player to return the ball successfully. The serving team cannot earn points from that rally but they can score the next point if they win their next serve and then receive a second return.


Doubles

In racquetball, teams of two players are formed for tournaments and competitions. They can play singles and doubles. However, they can also form "cut throat" teams of three.

How to Play with Doubles

Racquetball rules in doubles are stricter than singles. For instance, only one racquet is allowed per player. It is illegal to walk behind your partner when they return the ball.

You can only hit the ball with a racquet that is slung over your shoulder, but not one that is held above your head. The wrist thong should be securely fastened to the racquet.

A fault is when the server fails to serve the ball within ten seconds of the score call. If the server does not serve the ball in the right position, it is called a serving fault.

Safety Zone Violations

In racquetball, the safety zone is the area between doubles partners' service boxes. If a served ball hits the doubles partner within this area, it will result in a loss in serve.

Defective Serve

The serving player or doubles partner must not enter the safety zone before the served ball passes the short line and must be in the service box when a serve is called.
